The Texas Rangers traded for Mike Napoli on Jan. 25, 2011.It was a weird time in Dallas sports. The Rangers were wheeling, dealing. The Super Bowl was upon us. The Mavericks and Stars were playing. Little did we know what a disaster one would be and what an insanely awesome treat the other would be (a post from Jan. 28: "Why Can't The Dallas Mavericks Blow Anyone Out?")
The Napoli trade did get our attention. Mostly for who we were giving up.
It was Napoli for Frank Francisco and cash.
I particularly liked the trade adding that I didn't think the bullpen would suffer much without Francisco on the back.
My thoughts on Napoli:
Furthermore, with Michael Young as your DH/utility man, Napoli can share time at first base, catcher and DH. Two kind of super-utility men. Tons of flexibility and an added right handed bat that could help maximize his talent considering he's had injury issues previously. It provides added pop to the line-up without spending a ton of money to some overpaid, wash-up former slugger.
That's exactly what's happened. Ron Washington's been able to use Napoli, Young, Mitch Moreland and even Yorvit Torrealba in a series of roles that suits them and puts them in a position to succeed.
As good of a trade that we thought it was, no one thought it'd be this good. Napoli hasn't been adequate or "good enough." He's been spectacular.
He's a gigantic bat in the middle of the line-up. The mass of strikeouts that pockmarked his early career have gone away (137 a year ago ... 55 this year). He'll more than likely set career marks in every major hitting category.
What's worse, at least for the Angels, is that he's regarded as a very good catcher. In fact, he's caught 36 games and played first 20 times. Maybe its his pitchers. But you have to consider that those guys on the mound are succeeding with Napoli behind the plate.
MLB Trade Rumors looked at the Napoli trade. Remember, the Angels traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays before the Blue Jays flipped him to the Rangers.
I don't know if the Blue Jays knew the Rangers were interested and made the deal just to get Frank Francisco. Nonetheless, the Rangers won this. This is how.
