I don't know if the Seattle Mariners are the worst team in Major League Baseball. I sure as hell would not bet against them.Give me the youth of Kansas City, the pitching of Oakland and Florida, the fact that Baltimore's probably better looking outside of the AL East, the willingness to spend money for the Chicago Cubs and the fact that San Diego tends to rise up every fourth year over anything that the Seattle Mariners are putting on the field.
Their two best players -- Felix Hernandez and Michael Pineda -- play every fifth day. Ichiro probably needs a new scene. Dustin Ackley may turn into something, but I don't know if I clear off a dozen All-Star appearances for the guy.
The Mariners suck, and the Rangers took advantage 9-2 tonight.
It was batting practice. They had 15 hits by eight players and RBI from six. They drew seven walks and the Mariners pitched in with two errors.
If you're going to put a guy named "Charlie Furbush" in Arlington, prepare for runs scored (Furbush against Rangers, career: 7 IP, 8 earned runs).
Meanwhile, Matt Harrison continues to mow down opponents. He's failed only to pitch six innings in three outings (22 starts). His ERA's dropped to 3.06. My fav Harrison stat: 12 home runs in 138 innings. My second fav: 42 walks in the same amount.
Good times.
Notes:
1. Times for last two games: 2:38 and 2:42.
2. Matt Harrison won his 10th game. Fifth Rangers pitcher to double-digit in 116 games, only 1998 Atlanta Braves and 1954 Cleveland Indians have done the same so quickly.
3. Seven-game hit streak for Yorvit Torrealba. Fourteen hits in that span with five doubles. Average up to .280, hitting .520 in August.
4. Harrison with Mike Napoli catching:
59.2 IP - 45 hits - 12 runs - 2 HRs - 16 BBs - 40 Ks. 7-0 with two no decisions.
5. The contributions of Mike Napoli could not have been imagined. Being played situationally has preserved him and put him in a position to win. His OPS is 1.009. His OBP is .398.
6. Darren O'Day with three groundball outs. Needs to do that for two more months.
