It is game No. 1 of 82. Still, you aim to win them all. When you don't, you aim to win the rest.

The Dallas Stars kicked off their 2011-12 season with a 2-1 win over Chicago at the American Airlines Center last night.

No matter what your prospects for the Stars are for this season, there are much worse ways to start a season.

Poetically, the difference makers were guys that, in the long run, need to take a step forward this season. One game is no story. However, it's a beginning, and that's all you can ask for.

Kari Lehtonen
The goalkeep showed he can play in 60+ games last year. Now he needs to show that he can take a team to the playoffs. Lehtonen stopped 37 shots last night, many of them standing on his head. The Stars -- partly thanks to Lehtonen -- held off four Blackhawk power plays, a vital area of improvement should this team think of itself as a playoff team.

Jamie Benn
Critics around the nation pointed to one guy as someone that needs to take a step up with Brad Richards gone. If Benn's production is going to go up, we're talking 40 or so goals and 70+ points. It's a good start.

Alex Goligoski
Notched a goal. You're looking at a guy that can redefine your blue line, your scoring defense and power play. You can find wingers. You can find bruising defensemen. Finding a defenseman with a little brains and puck-handling ability is a different matter. We'll always think of James Neal and Matt Niskanen fondly, but they won't be missed.

Sheldon Souray
Wondering, after one game, whether the Stars found the off-season gem here.
