The rumors and actions in college football realignment greatly outpace the talk.As Missouri looks primed for a move to the SEC along with Texas A&M, the talk from Big XII and SEC head honchos seem nonplussed. Chuck Neinas expects Mizzou to stay. SEC folks don't intend to add another team in the near future.
Yet, here we are adding Mizzou.
That's been the MO the entire time. A lot more going on behind the scenes than we can probably imagine.
Meanwhile, the Big East has gotten pushed around for too long. After Syracuse, Pitt and TCU jumped ship, the conference has agreed to up the exit fee for football schools from $5 million to $10 million.
They've extended or talked about extending offers to Houston, SMU, Boise State and Air Force. This means if Boise State or SMU decide to join up, leaving the next year for the Pac 10 or Big XII will cost you big time.
The weekend:
Texas A&M 55, Baylor 28
Ryan Tannehill completed 68 percent of his 34 passes as the Aggies nearly collected 700 yards of offense. Ryan Swope caught 11 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns. RGIII had as good of a game as you can while losing: 28-40, 413 yards and three touchdowns. Huge win for A&M as they face Iowa State and Mizzou in consecutive weeks. Could be 6-2 heading to Oklahoma.
Kansas State 41, Texas Tech 34
I don't know why beating Tech would be a coming-out party for K-State, but the nation is finally noticing their 6-0 start. K-State wins by playing defense, running the ball and special teams. It's a foreign concept. The Wildcats have beaten Eastern Kentucky, Kent State, Baylor, Miami, Missouri and, now, Tech. They will be 7-0 hosting Oklahoma in two weeks.
SMU 38, UCF 17
For its level of competition, no one in the state may be playing better than SMU. They've won five straight and, oh by the way, they aren't too bad defensively. Fourteen of UCF's 17 came in trash time as SMU took control early. Zach Line has 13 rushing touchdowns on the year and Cole Beasley is a beast.
Oklahoma 47, Kansas 17
If it's any consolation for Kansas, it was 10-10 early in the second quarter and 24-17 just before halftime. Then they wound up being screwed into the ground by OU by 30.
Oklahoma State 38, Texas 26
The David Ash Experiment begins. Mack Brown settled on the freshman Ash as the full-time quarterback after going with the dual threat of Ash with Case McCoy for a couple of weeks. Ash has seen better days and you wonder should he continue to struggle when the pressure will overwhelm Brown into starting McCoy, because everyone's dying for the McCoy to Shipley connection. Oklahoma State decided to practice his ground game running 25 times for 208 yards. Still, Brandon Wheeden completed just 23 of his 41 passes. Malcolm Brown rushed for 135 yards on 19 carries. Why is anyone kicking to Fozzie Whittaker any longer?
Missouri 52, Iowa State 17
The Tigers piled up nearly 600 yards of offense running the Cyclones into the ground. Iowa State, meanwhile, has lost three straight -- all in conference -- after starting 3-0 with wins against Iowa and Connecticut. They are also without top running back Shontrelle Johnson for the rest of the year.
Louisiana-Lafayette 30, UNT 10
The Mean Green scored all 10 points in the first quarter. And then were shutout for the next three. But no one can take away that 10-7 lead going into the second quarter. Nobody.
