Beefy
Texas Rangers president Nolan Ryan said today on Randy Galloway's radio show that he predicts the Rangers to win the World Series in six games.

It's making headlines because it's a bold, ballsy move from a legend. Proclamations of this sort always ruffle feathers. The debate rolls on as to whether its cocky, confident or just dumb.

However, there's more to Ryan's comments.

For one, I implore you to read everything he said. This quote paraphrases it:
"If it doesn't happen, we're going to be disappointed we didn't get it done. Is that to say we didn't have a great year? No. We had a lot of great things happen. But it would be an incomplete year for us."
Thus, Ryan's Rangers not finishing the job wouldn't be a mere loss in the World Series. It would cast a pall on the entire season. It would make what happened the previous 170 games moot.

Also, Ryan is taking one for his team. The players aren't coming off as cocky. Ron Washington isn't out there making bold predictions. No, it's Nolan. The Express. Ian Kinsler goes out and says the Rangers will win in six and he hits .143 with a half dozen errors, the world comes down upon him.

Nolan says it, and its the team president exercising confidence in his team and explaining that standards are high now. No longer is "getting there" good enough. That's refreshing. Dallas sports rarely sees this attitude.

Two, isn't he saying what most of us are already kind of thinking? Everything we are saying about the St. Louis Cardinals and how dangerous they are, they have to be saying the same about the Rangers. Nolan has the right to be confident. Do you think George Steinbrenner thought any less of even his worst Yankees teams?
