It's weird seeing "NHL's best" next to the Dallas Stars. As it stands, on Nov. 9, 2011, the Dallas Stars are the best team in the NHL. Now, they need to battle for another 68 games and make particularly sure that they are one of the top 16 teams in the NHL by late March.
Things, currently, are looking good. The Stars beat one of the Eastern Conference's best, the Washington Capitals, last night, 5-2. They're 2-0 on this current East-Coast roadie. Some were saying four points out of these four games would be a success. Well, the four points are there.
Again, the Benn-Eriksson-Ryder line ruled the world. The trio combined for three goals and three assists. Benn, specifically, is on a torrid pace. He has points in six straight and eight points in the last three games.
Mike Ryder also has proven his worth. Again, Joe Nieuwendyk had a choice in the off-season and he decided to improve the bottom and middle of this roster instead of the top. So far, it's paying dividends.
Ryder had two goals last night and he's learning that life with Benn and Eriksson is good. Both he and Benn are on insane paces to trump last year's numbers.
Again, this means a lot and yet it might mean nothing. You need to continue to win and get points. You need to battle for the next five months for any of this start to matter.
Notes:
1. More and more, I'm finding it hard to disassociate good things on the ice with Vernon Fiddler. The numbers hardly show it, but he is always around good things.
2. Adam Burish already has three goals and four assists on the year. He had eight goals and six assists a year ago.
3. Kari Lehtonen's 11-1 with a 2.13 GAA.
4. With the great start, Brenden Morrow's got seven points. In 14 games.
