The NBA season was supposed to start last night.Know who give a shit?
Dirk Nowitzki.
I kid. Sorta. No doubt Das German would like to be out there on the court, playing grabass in the locker room and going clubbing with Steve Nash (all of which he can probably still do ... although Nash is a daddy now and has no time for hitting Plush), but there's little that can drag him down from cloud No. 9.
The dude's been in the States the last several weeks and any time I see him it's like he's walking on air. He still hasn't come down from what happened in June.
I couldn't be happier for any one individual. It's refreshing actually. Not that Nowitzki isn't a professional, but most guys win a title and are their old selves. Nowitkzki looks like someone relieved him of a one-ton weight off his shoulders. By all accounts (see: Twitter) he's spent the summer watching tennis, soccer and the Texas Rangers.
With the lockout lingering and the prospect of no games until January looming, the Dallas Mavericks can sit back.
The Mavericks played in 103 games last season, not counting pre-season contests or practices and the wear that comes with travel and whatnot.
In the playoffs alone, they played a svelte 21 games. That's a lot of minutes and miles on the wheels of Jason Terry, Tyson Chandler, Nowitzki and Jason Kidd.
This time off is a good thing. I don't know how complacent everyone is these days. The Rangers and Cowboys have fans on edge. Is everyone OK with the one championship?
Still, the Mavericks are the defending champs if they make another run, they will definitely try. Getting an extra month or two off in addition to a 50-game season will not hurt in the least to rest those old bones.
Furthermore, it probably doesn't hurt Roddy Beaubois and Dom Jones getting extra time to fully heal and prepare for their future, wherever and however that is.
