Terrific weekend of college football. Why mince words?TCU 36, Boise State 35
Man, what a great match-up and a great game. Can't wait to see these two BCS underlings face off for the next ... oh wait, they will probably never see each other again after TCU bolts for the Big XII and Boise State settle their eventual destination. But it's a match-up that will go down as a classic as the Frogs upset the undefeated Broncos on the road. Obviously a devastating loss for Boise and a monumental pin-up win for TCU, who are on their way to a 10-win, top 15 "rebuilding" year. Casey Paschall had his best game completing 65 percent of his passes and throwing for 473 yards and five touchdowns. He had touchdown passes of 74, 75 and 69 yards. Thrilling.
Oklahoma State 66, Texas Tech 6
The Cowboys are proving scary. Having a high-flying offense the last several season, their ability to score has never been questioned. Defense was always the issue. Holding Seth Doege to 58 percent passing, 169 yards and no touchdowns proves that this team is different. Tech's offense failed to register a touchdown. That has to be a record over the past 20 years. And this game was IN LUBBOCK. OU's loss to Tech is looking worse and worse. Meanwhile, isn't Brandon Weeden a Heisman contender?
Kansas State 53, Texas A&M 50
The 2011 Texas A&M Aggies! Man, they are a joke. It's their third second-half flub of the season and they've "been in" every loss of the year. I don't know if it's a lack of focus or conditioning, but it typically boils down to one of those two. If I'm an Aggie, I'm pissed. How do you put up with all that crap? All that talent spiraling down the toilet? This team should be easily in the top 10 with nine wins including over Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Mizzou and Arkansas. Instead, they are pathetic. Even if they get a bowl invite, they should turn it down. Go into the SEC humbled.
Baylor 31, Kansas 30
The third thriller of local note. Baylor was down 24-3 starting the fourth quarter. From 11:55 to 3:55 in the frame, Baylor scored on plays of 49, 36 and 67 yards. This is expected from Kansas. They do what they do. What's wrong with Baylor? They've struggled against bad teams, gotten blown out by the good ones and wound up farting along in the fourth quarter from week to week. Maddening team. Still, six wins and bowl eligible.
Missouri 17, Texas 5
You watched two enigmas if you viewed this game. Especially if the entirety of the Longhorn back field is hurt: Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron didn't play, and Fozzy Whittaker's college career is over due to torn ligaments. Putting the ball in David Ash's hands is not a good strategy.
North Texas 38, Troy 33
Do not look now, but the Mean Green could be cooking. Derek Thompson had a brilliant game (31-38, 331 yards) and they've shown they can beat the scrubs on the schedule. They're no longer a scrub. Two games are left against Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky -- if they win both, they are bowl eligible. That would be the biggest surprise in Division I football. Period.
Navy 24, SMU 17
Navy are extraordinary. They threw the ball twice (two incompletions) and ran it 64 times. With the turnovers equal, the key was third-down conversions, 8-13 for the Midshipmen. This was a killer game for SMU. Should have won it. Turnovers did not help. Inability to stop the run killed. If fans are antsy about the Texas Rangers getting to World Series, when do we start to not think seven or eight wins is a good season for SMU?
SFA 28, Southeast Louisiana 20
Getting the wheels back on. The Jacks have won four straight all against the dregs of the conference. How bad are their opponents? The Jacks threw four interceptions yesterday and still won by more than a touchdown.
