Picking his brain
I'm pretty sure that most media outlets did not understand the penalty that came down from the NFL yesterday on the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins.

Most are running with the Associated Press story, which as vague as shit. It states that the Cowboys will lose $10 million and the Redskins $36 million in cap space in 2012 and 2013 for spending too much during the uncapped 2010 season.

But what does that mean? The Associated Press didn't explain; thus, most outlets didn't take the time. Luckily, The Dallas Morning News got to the meat of the situation.

The Cowboys and Redskins supposedly issued a bunch of front-loaded contracts ... meaning a bulk of the money owed the player came during the uncapped year and the contract would play itself out during the capped years following the new collective bargaining agreement.

A quote from the Cowboys stated they were in "compliance" with all "salary cap rules" during the uncapped year. Thing is, I don't know if there was a "rule" in the strictest of senses. According to media in the know, the league warned teams against doing this. The Cowboys and Redskins did it anyway. Just look at their owners and you know why.

That money will filter to the other teams in the league and the Cowboys are at a disadvantage with, currently, $5 million in cap space this year. Assuming they rework some deals, they could wind up with about $15 million. Doesn't seem enough to buy you some corners, offensive linemen and linebackers. But, then again, Jerry Jones is the smartest man in the room. Don't ever forget that.
