Beras
Want a bunch of question marks to pop up atop a bunch of heads, mention Jairo Beras.

Forty-eight hours ago I doubt a vast majority of everyone on Earth had zero thought about Beras, a supposedly 17-year-old outfield prospect in the Dominican Republic.

Then the Texas Rangers stirred shit up.

The Internet blew up yesterday when it was reported that the Rangers signed Beras to a $4.5 million bonus. Normally, this news would be a bow on top of the Rangers' brilliant year in collecting Latin American talent.

Instead, it caused controversy.

The Rangers say Beras is 17 years old. Many around the game insist he is 16 years old. Identity and age discrepancies is an issue in baseball anyway. This is exacerbating things.

Thing is, due to the latest collective bargaining agreement starting July 2 (International Signing Day) that teams will have a $2.9 million cap on international signings. And that Beras, being 16, was not eligible to sign until then.

Of course, the Rangers -- although not publicly -- think he's 17 and very eligible.

Clearly, MLB will get to the bottom of this.
