One week away from the NFL Draft. All is quiet.
Baltimore Sun
14. Mark Barron
Safety - Alabama
This dude has LSU's Michael Brockers and Memphis' Dontari Poe right after, two of the best defensive tackles in the draft.
Peter Schrager/Fox Sports
14. David DeCastro
Guard - Stanford
DeCastro is the best offensive guard in the draft and if the Cowboys are anywhere near serious about getting good, they should invest more into the offensive line. For the last seven years or so, they've trawled the practice squads and trash heaps of other teams for interior line help. The last interior lineman taken by the Cowboys in the first three rounds: 2004, Stephen Peterman, guard, third round. He didn't stick around here, but Peterman's had a good career in Detroit. There's some logic here. I think moves in the off-season showed that you can address the defense and that you need help up front, more than you think.
Bill Jones/CBS 11
I may not agree with his opinion, but Bill Jones certainly throws a monkey wrench into what he thinks the Cowboys should/might do on draft day. Citing a lock of an impact player falling to No. 14, Jones has Jerry Jones trading their first- and second-round picks to Cleveland (who also have the No. 4 pick) for their first-, second- and third-round picks.
He then has the Cowboys taking ...
22. Coby Fleener
Tight End - Stanford
Fleener is the best tight end in the draft. He's a big athletic beast of a man. Jones said he'll do everything we thought Martellus Bennett would do. Now, this sounds ridiculous. Why would you spend a first-round pick addressing a position that you already have one of the best ever in franchise history (Jason Witten)? Well, it's a pick in the 20s, so the argument that you take the best available without the fear of investing a ton of money is in play. Two, Witten's not a spring chicken, I guess. And Fleener wore No. 82 at Stanford (!!!).
Yes, it seems ridiculous to trade down in order to take a tight end when there's probably a half dozen bigger issues on the team.
Before you brush off Jones' opinion, note who else he has the Cowboys taking: Ryan Broyles out of Oklahoma, the center from Baylor, some linebacker from Arkansas and then Baylor running back Terence Ganaway.
Doesn't that sound like a Jerry Jones draft?
Big XII presence? Check. Arkansas flyer? Check. Local ties? Check. Reclamation project? Check. Crazy moves that address none of your needs? Check.
Of course, Jones doesn't paint this as "This is what Jerry Jones will do" as much as it's his opinion that the Cowboys should go completely off the map and go for impact players. All of this, however, is not the most completely crazy thing ever. Entertaining, nonetheless.
