Outside of a 30-0 complete disintegration of the franchise, the Texas Rangers probably could not have asked for a better start to their four-game series against the California Angels.Nineteen pitches in, Angels starter Garrett Richards left the game with a bad groin or something. It was another 8.1 innings of Angels bullpen in the 8-4 win for the Rangers.
I think, at best, the Angels wanted five innings out of their rookie. Chances are, the Rangers were going to get to him. He'd already allowed an unearned run. I don't know if Richards was long for the game anyway.
It did force the Angels to dig into their bullpen -- four relievers, 139 pitches. It's Tyler Chatwood tonight. Luckily, they have Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver the final two games. If the Angels dip into the bullpen in those games, they have bigger issues.
Alexi Ogando got his 12th win. I didn't think he was overpowering or great. But he was good. Seemed to throw a lot of strikes. Yet, some of those guys he got in front of wound up on base. He allowed eight hits and two walks. He struck out just two. Not sharp, but sharp enough if your offense is going to put eight on the boards.
Offensively, pick your poison. Ian Kinsler had four hits and three runs. Mike Young had a pair of RBI and three hits. Mitch Moreland -- out of the nine-hole -- had three hits. Nellie Cruz had a two-run homer. Mike Napoli homered.
Currently, the Rangers aren't easy to pitch to. If your hottest hitters are batting seventh and eighth (Mike Napoli, Yorvit Torrealba), then you pray for an off night from Josh Hamilton or Elvis Andrus.
If all is well, the Rangers are hard to keep pace with.
Notes:
1. Five-game lead.
2. Torrealba's 12-game hit streak ended.
3. Nelson Cruz has 103 hits and 77 RBI. Seems incredibly effecient. He also has a tight quad.
4. We will look back at Ian Kinsler's season in four months and realize how ridiculously good it was.
5. Mark Lowe's ERA's dropped to a respectable 3.22, almost a full run lower than late-July. However, I wonder how long that 1.57 WHIP will hold up. All those base runners got to start scoring eventually.
6. You have no idea how much I love Koji Uehara.
7. 70-52. Eighteen over.
