This fall on TBS, "Cone & Matthews"
The Texas Rangers have until midnight tonight to sign the other 26 guys that they drafted in June. It's the national deadline for signing. Otherwise, those kids will go back to school, go to a university or community college or go work at Home Depot.

Since Jon Daniels has been general manager, the Rangers have been efficient in signing their guys (as long as they've had the money ... cough cough ... Matt Purke).

Already, the Rangers have signed their first five picks (one being a compesation pick), eight of their first 11 and 16 of their first 21 picks.

Most of them are laboring in the Arizona Rookie League or Spokane. Granted, Daniels, the last two seasons, have taken pretty safe bets in the early rounds of the draft.

The good thing is that you get these guys into professional baseball as soon as possible. The downside is that you may not be getting premier talent. Time will tell.

As the deadline approaches, the Rangers, as noted, have 26 guys not signed. Most notably missing are picks Nos. 5, 6 and 7.

No. 5 is right hander Brandon Woodruff, No. 6 is outfielder Derek Fisher (who I heard is going to school) and No. 7 is catcher Max Pentecost.

Also regrettably not signed are the awesomely named Joseph Pankake (which may or may not be pronounced "pancake") and Cy Sneed, which is just a cool name.
