That slapping sound you heard around north Texas over the weekend was the Philadelphia Eagles bending Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys across their laps and delivering a few licks. The Eagles stole the Cowboys lunch money over the weekend swooping in and signing defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins (five years, $25 million) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (five years, $60 million).
The Eagles were already fucking scary. Now they're legit contenders. No way the Cowboys can be considered favs in the NFC East, if they ever were.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys re-signed Marcus Spears (five years, $19 million) and Kenyon Coleman (two years).
You get what you pay for. Spears, at best, is serviceable. Because he's a "nice guy," folks tend to cut him slack. Tony Romo takes a lot more shit as an undrafted free agent than Terence Newman or Spears as first-round picks.
As a fourth-round pick, Spears is a find. As a first-round pick, he's a disaster. I still think the Cowboys are woefully thin at defensive tackle with Igor Olshansky, Spears and Coleman as your only veterans (and Olshansky and Spears, frankly, not being very good). Also, Jason Hatcher is more than likely out after turning down a Cowboys offer. I'd be a little surprised if they didn't throw a low-cost contract at another veteran.
Now, the Cowboys will turn their attention to the safety position where they are piss-poor. Abram Elam is an apparent target. The Eagles might sign him to be spiteful.
