There's never been a sweet number on a Monday morning.2.5. That's the Rangers' lead in the AL West as they and the Angels both won two of three over the weekend. Unfortunately, it was a weekend where you hoped to get a game. The Rangers sandwiched a Saturday loss between two beatings to the lowly Oakland Athletics, officially knocking the A's from the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the damn Yankees farted away two games Friday and Saturday only to eke out the Sunday win.
Still love the 2.5 games.
I like 14, too. That's the magic number for the Rangers.
Sunday saw the Rangers beat the Athletics 8-1 behind another gem from C.J. Wilson, who's won six of his last seven starts. They say his millions per year as his free agency nears will match his win total. He's at 16 wins. Imagine five years and $16 million per year. $80 million is a lot.
Nonetheless, he's been nails in his last seven, going 6-1:
47.2 IP - 34 hits - 11 runs - 5 HRs - 11 BBs - 44 Ks.
His numbers in the six wins:
42.2 - 24 hits - 5 runs - 1 HR - 10 BBs - 42 Ks.
That will win you games. That will get you rich.
By the way, Adrian Beltre eclipsed the not-so-elusive 300-homer mark days after getting his 2,000 hit.
Notes:
1. Beltre has a hit in every September game. His monthly numbers: .358/.391/.651 with 12 RBI.
2. Ian Kinsler in September: .405/.469/.976. He had eight hits and seven runs against A's.
3. Haven't heard a big explanation on Mike Napoli's sudden plate discipline. Little doubt that a career high in walks (53) and OBP (.405) directly influences career numbers in extra-base hits, average and RBI.
4. Colby Lewis on Friday: 7.1 IP - 5 hits - 3 runs - 1 HR - 1 BBs - 7 Ks. Keep it up.
5. Lewis against A's this year: 4-0 - 2.83 ERA - 0.86 WHIP - 6 BBs - 30 Ks.
6. Wilson's contract year, so far: 209 IP - 15 HRs - 178 hits - 67 BBs - 190 K - 1.17 WHIP.
7. Alexi Ogando is toast. No problem with him going to the bullpen and letting Scott Feldman get the starts. The fatigue is screwing with the command. Unfortunately, the command means there's fastballs in the middle of the plate. Love the guy and he needs to start against next season.
8. Yoshi Tateyama: 12 ER in last five appearances. Thinking batters have figured him out.
9. Neftali Feliz hasn't allowed a run since Aug. 6. Although he has walked eight in that time.
