The 2011 season for the Dallas Cowboys starts in several hours. For the first time in the full-time Tony Romo era, fans and media are not brimming with confidence.
This despite the new coach. Despite the running back that's look good all season. Despite the owner and general manager pruning off the old, expensive and unuseful.
To tell you the truth, I've never been more interested in the Dallas Cowboys since the 1994 season.
I know what Roy Williams and Marion Barber are about. I don't know about Bill Nagy, Kevin Ogletree, John Phillips and probably half of the 53-man roster.
They might not win a lot of games. They aren't winning a Super Bowl. They probably aren't getting into the playoffs.
Still, I'm in. And I hate the Cowboys.
Five things:
Blocking
The young offensive line has its work cut out for them. Three rookies, one of which (Tyron Smith) is gimpy going up against the salty New York Jets defense ... in New Jersey. This fivesome is going to get good really quickly. What are the chances Tony Romo survives until that day. That's why it's important ...
...To Run The Ball
Run blocking is easier than pass blocking. The Cowboys, to have a chance to win, must run the ball and run early. There's two variables in this equation, which seems remarkably simple: Can they run and will Jason Garrett want to run. Historically, this team has thrown the ball and asked questions later. Against a bad defense, this is maybe OK. Against the Jets, it's not. Because the Jets can go single coverage on the outside and allow the linebackers and defensive line to control the trenches. The Cowboys must run the ball effectively.
Plaxico Burress
His first professional football game in three years couldn't come on a bigger stage against the Cowboys, on Sunday night on Sept. 11, 2011. Historically, Burress hasn't done much against the Cowboys. About four catches and 61 yards per game. Just six touchdowns in eight games. I don't suspect he'll be a huge play-to-play factor tonight, but around that goalline, I doubt Orlando Scandrick wants to cover the 6-5 Burress on a fade.
Can They Cover?
The annual question for the Cowboys is whether the guys in the secondary can cover. Well, Mike Jenkins is banged up, Terence Newman ain't playing, Alan Ball is and outside of Abram Elam and Barry Church, I can't name you another safety. Answer: No, they can't.
The Ryans
Anytime Rex and Rob Ryan get together, it's probably the grossest thing ever. Foot fetishes, beer, greasy meats, cussing, yelling, farting. Shit. It's probably a two-man frat house. Another possible advantage for the Cowboys is Rob getting his defense to play the game of their lives against his brother. It's possible. Not likely.
Prediction
New York Jets 30, Dallas Cowboys 20
The Cowboys defense find it hard stopping the Jets vanilla offense. Just not enough talent behind the linebackers. And the Jets can play a little defense themselves.
