Keys to the Season: Tony Romo

Time to reset our standards
Dallas Cowboys fans have a really skewed perspective on the quarterback position.

Instead of comparing Tony Romo to, say, Danny White, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman or Don Meredith (in terms of winning), fans and media tend to, instead, compare him based on performance and trust. And not against those Hall of Famers (except White, of course).

Romo is instead compared to Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, the Drews (Bledsoe, Henson), Anthony Wright and the dregs of the quarterback position that the Cowboys ran out there post-Aikman.

If Romo is as good as we think he is, he's like a nice steak dinner. And instead of comparing him to another nice dinner, fans and media compare him to a Taco Bell Meximelt.

I think Cowboys pundits think they can get good output from Tony Romo, insane stats and whatnot, and still win.

This is untrue.

From this season on, the Cowboys must require MVP-like "performances" from Romo, not record-breaking stats and not good tries.

Until he quits or is let go, Romo must be in the top five in MVP voting. If he's not, I can guarantee you that the Cowboys had a season not worth note.

I don't know why the standards are so skewed, especially for a media base and fandom that expects to go to the Super Bowl at the smallest lark that the Cowboys might be good.

It's haughty standards that have made the Cowboys nation (in addition to the Lakers, Yankees and Red Wings) a difficult bunch to relate to or feel sorry for.

But when it comes to the quarterback with the dimples and aw-shucks attitude, we cut him the maximum amount of slack.

Romo is probably a top 15 quarterback in this league. Which would be fine if there were 50 teams in the league. Instead, there are 32. That makes Romo mediocre. It means there are probably another 10-14 quarterbacks that'd be better than what we got.

Why do fans stand for this?

They should demand greatness. Aikman didn't have Romo's athleticism or stats. Aikman knew exactly what it took to win (having Emmitt Smith didn't hurt).

Romo needs to step up. He needs to put this team (defense and all) on his back and carry them. No one else on the team can do this. Most aren't even in a position to do so. Romo is. Greatness should be demanded.
