If you'd like to simplify the last month of the Texas Rangers' season, just think of two of three. If the Rangers win two of three in a series, the Rangers will win the AL West because unless the California Angels go on a 10-game winning streak (they can barely beat the Mariners), the Rangers have this in the bag.
Two of three allows you to forget Wednesday's disaster where Alexi Ogando couldn't get out of the third inning and the total lack of offensive urgency resulted in a 4-1 loss.
Instead, we can look at the game one and three victories and move on. Behind a salty start from C.J. Wilson and a pair of homers from Ian Kinsler, the Rangers sent the Tampa Bay Rays along their merry way, 7-2.
Wilson took perfection to the sixth inning until he took a comebacker off his hand and he proceeded to allow a single, a home run, a walk and a hit by pitch (not in sequential order). He was pulled and the bullpen went three scoreless striking out four along the way.
As much as we can agonize about the Rangers and the potential of the Angels continuing this pennant race (it's funny that we're freaking out about something that the Yankees, Red Sox and other teams do every year), it's really obvious that the Rangers are a very good baseball team. There should be something to say for that.
Notes:
1. Dave Murphy has a six-game hit streak. That includes two doubles, two homers, nine RBI and even two stolen bases. He has a chance, with Nelson Cruz out, to make everyone forget about April-July.
2. There are nights when I want to strangle Ian Kinsler. Then I take a step back, a deep breath and appreciate everything he does. He's having a mammoth season on both sides of the ball.
3. Yorvit Torrealba has 100 hits. His career high is 101. He's exceeded everyone's expectations.
4. Mike Adams is absolutely cooking. He had a 1.88 ERA in August with a 1.05 WHIP and a .208 BAA. And this was his second-worst month of the year.
