Do you know why Jason Kidd and Troy Aikman have championship rings although those with more talent and ability don't?Brains.
If you put Chris Paul on Jason Kidd in a game of one-on-one, Kidd will lose. Paul will blow right by him over and over. It's a fact. Probably even in Kidd's young heyday, it would've been a tough game.
Certainly, Aikman was helped by a superior offensive line and a running game that absolutely took over games. There are others with stronger arms, more mobility and all the ability in the world.
JaMarcus Russell can throw a ball 50 yards on his ass. He also can't get a job in the NFL and it wouldn't matter how much cough syrup he was getting shipped to his house.
In sports, brains can even the playing field. Braun, mostly, can't.
The Cowboys are arguably one of the dumbest teams in the NFL and despite all the talent in the world (injuries or no) they will wind up 7-9 or 8-8.
Intelligence runs downhill. I think it was a commodity when Bill Parcells was around. When he left and dummy Wade Phillips took over as head coach, intelligence took a backseat to athletic ability. No doubt, the Cowboys have been a very athletic team. Tony Romo's an excellent basketball player. DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones are fucking specimens. Dez Bryant's a freak.
Now, if we can teach them how to play football.
It's brains -- or the lack thereof -- sinking the Cowboys currently and will always be the obstacle in their way until further notice. I would assume that the Princeton grad Jason Garrett sees the writing on the wall here.
Going out of bounds as you are running down the clock. Going out of bounds instead of getting the first down. Extremely poor route running. Bad angles on defense. Penalties and a loss of mechanics and fundamentals on the offensive line.
Every week it's something new from a new player. We get angry and are unable to replace them because it's not like anyone else is any better.
Parcells used to preach to Tony Romo that sacks and interceptions are very bad. Incompletions and punts are good.
Replace one of Romo's pick sixes from the Detroit game with a punt and the Cowboys are probably 3-1, the Lions incur their first loss and Romo's not a goat. Just one. Throw it two rows deep, attempt to create a crater into the ground, anything but throw the ball to the other team.
Fact is, Romo isn't going to get better. Physically, he's at his peak. Mentally you hope he can turn a corner, but, mostly, what we see is what we're going to get. Jason Kidd's become a mentally superior basketball player (always very strong, but now he must rely on his experience and brains). Will Romo be the same at 34?
Those interceptions, all three, are inexcusably awful. The cornerback, linebacker or safety didn't make insane athletic moves to make the interceptions. The one to Carpenter required a simple read, something we can all do on Madden '12.
The last one to Witten is talked about by Witten as "one of those things." If he gets a "little" more on the ball it's a big play, one that potentially wins them the game. Unfortunately, this isn't Madden '12. You're not going to blow the rest of your schedule out of the water. You can't hit the "reset" button.
In that game, at that moment being at home, I think you throw the ball where no one catches it -- either 15 yards beyond Witten, at a cheerleader or anywhere else in the world. It was first down with a ton of time left.
Romo, I think, is really talented. I do not think he makes good decisions enough for a team to really go far. He's not alone. I don't think Felix Jones, Tashard or Martellus Bennett are very smart. I don't think the secondary is smart at all outside of Gerald Sensabaugh or Abram Elam.
The Cowboys don't need to get better. They need to get smarter. I don't know if there's a Training Camp for smarts.
