Rain, Justin Verlander, Terry Francona or that commercial with Aaron Rodgers buying insurance could not stop the Texas Rangers tonight.America, be scared.
The Rangers edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 tonight to win game 1 of the ALCS.
This despite Verlander taking the mound and about two hours worth of rain delay. We've been stuck in a drought for four months and the fucking rain couldn't hold out for another couple of hours?
Hours before the game started, I came on here and pointed out five things I thought needed to happen in order for there to be success for the Rangers or that could change the outcome of the series. I found them rather prophetic (or pathetic) as the game occurred.
Verlander
The Rangers had to get to him somehow and they did. Verlander was forced to pitch his ass off. The tone was set when Ian Kinsler worked a first-inning walk. He got 12 outs and threw 82 pitches doing it. The Rangers forced Verlander to throw strikes, fouled some good pitches off and made Verlander throw them again. He actually wasn't bad, but he clearly wasn't sharp. The rain further threw monkey wrench in his night.
Control
I thought the Rangers pitchers were fantastic. C.J. Wilson was clearly more than shaky and he got away with some things. Still, Alexi Ogando was filthy. Darren Oliver was solid. Mike Adams really good. And Neftali Feliz ... I doubt he's ever looked better. They all threw strikes. They got ahead early and for the last three innings, the Tiger hitters looked silly. I don't recall a time that a Tiger got good, solid contact on a ball (Austin Jackson's double was simply a great hit on his part).
Boomstick
Back. Against the best pitcher in the league. And you saw two months of frustration circle down the drain.
Lefties
Josh Hamilton was a non-factor, but the Rangers are nursing a loss without David Murphy.
This was a grinding win. The Rangers will continue to succeed in this games because they know how to grind. It is in their DNA. It is what they do. They will do it again tomorrow and the next day. It's not going to get any easier, and it's going to be the Rangers doing it.
