When you break it down, all of the major Dallas-Fort Worth sports franchises have rebuilt themselves, at least to some extent. The Rangers re-racked after Jon Daniels was given the reins and he began stocking the minor league system.
The Dallas Mavericks kept their base -- Dirk Nowitzki -- and completely re-made the team jettisoning the likes of Devin Harris and Josh Howard.
The Dallas Stars have had no choice but to get younger and cheaper. They can't afford any other real options.
Even the Dallas Cowboys have sort of took a look in the mirror and not liked what they saw. Maybe it was Andre Gurode's fat belly jiggle into Training Camp that forced decision makers to realize that they may not win a Super Bowl in February 2012, but they weren't moving forward with the likes of Gurode and Marc Columbo. Or maybe they were trying to save money.
Here is a list of the top 10 Dallas-Fort Worth athletes under 25. Most interesting is how many folks aren't under 25. Loui Eriksson's 26. Alexi Ogando's 28. Doug Free's 27 and Derrick Dockery's 31. Just doesn't seem right. But it is.
Also, all apologies to those who didn't make the list: John Phillips, Phillip Tanner, Dominque Jones, Ian Mahinmi, Corey Brewer, Martellus Bennett, Roddy Beaubois, Leonys Martin, "Killer" Kowalski, David Arkin, Phil Costa, Vic Butler, Bruce Carter and the others that failed to be very good and very young.
Felix Jones
24 - Dallas Cowboys
It's almost unbelievable that he's just 24 years old. That's enough give him the time to turn into something. He's in his fourth year in the league and has played more than 10 games twice and acculmulated 2,000 yards rushing. There's question as to whether he's a feature back and that's deserved. But the upside here is too tremendous. It is funny that the previous three years he would have been top three.
Orlando Scandrick
24 - Dallas Cowboys
I think he's the most dependable cornerback on the team. So good in the slot that even with injuries on the outside he stays near the line. Weekly is taking it to some of the best receivers in the league. Not bad at all for a fifth round pick.
Derek Holland
25 - Texas Rangers
At his best, he's breathtakingly dominant. At his worst ... well, we know his worst quite well. Looking at his age and what he's done in the league, the very idea of somehow trading him seems really ridiculous.
Dez Bryant
23 - Dallas Cowboys
If Tony Romo is Danny White 2.0, then Bryant is Terrell Owens 2.0. That says a lot. I think it speaks to his size and ability. His tenacity and desire to get the ball no matter where its at on the field. I think he's also dumber than a bag of hammers, makes poor decisions, thinks mostly of himself and could be a guy with all the numbers in the world in 15 years and, yet, no one thinks he's a Hall of Fame receiver.
Sean Lee
25 - Dallas Cowboys
Separated at birth: Lee and Holland. Look into it. Lee's simply a star. A playmaking, hard-working star. And he was barely getting onto the field in lieu of Keith Brooking a year ago.
Neftali Feliz
23 - Texas Rangers
There's something weird about Feliz. I can't put my finger on it. Nolan Ryan and Ron Washington were right to criticize Feliz this season for the pitcher's lack of energy or poor body language. Of course, I'm getting the feeling that that's the way he is. Gets pushed way up because he's still a pup (23 ... and two full seasons under his belt) and the idea that he might start.
DeMarco Murray
23 - Dallas Cowboys
I've yet to find the man's weakness. He runs hard, is quick, sees the play and stays patient, he breaks tackles and I haven't seen him take a square hit in three games. He can catch the ball and be the horse. Zero, zilch to hate here. Doesn't make the top 10 three months ago.
Jamie Benn
22 - Dallas Stars
Not that the Stars had a huge choice in the matter, but watching Brad Richards walk in the off-season was more of a placement of faith in Benn. Three seasons and three straight seasons of improved play.
Tyron Smith
20 - Dallas Cowboys
Not a lot of talk about Smith in this young season. Many in this organization have taken grief the first eight weeks and I've yet to hear anyone really criticize Smith for much of anything. Fact is, overall, he's been good and, sometimes, great. The thought that he's only going to get better should keep every Cowboys fan on edge.
Elvis Andrus
23 - Texas Rangers
For me, there's no clear No. 1. Anyone in town could rank these 100 different ways and I'd not be able to disagree in the least. This is why Tiny E is No. 1: He plays the hardest and (arguably) most important defensive position in baseball; he plays it exceptionally well ... even with flair; he has the patience and temperment of an aged veteran; you can tell there's some leadership coming from his place; he bats lead-off and walks a bunch, he bats second and shows the same patience and ability; he's only really getting better. I don't think he's hit his ceiling.
