I always use Dotel in my cheese dip
Finger. Pulse. Texas Rangers. Right here.

I was a little shocked a week ago when I read a rumor about teams interested in reliever Octavio Dotel. Seems like a perfect fit for the Rangers for years actually. Considering he's played for 12 teams -- including the World Series-winning St. Louis Cardinals -- you'd figure at some point he'd wind up with the Rangers. Certainly, he's been rumored to come here several times.

You know, for a journeyman (which seems inexplicable ... except when you consider he's played for bad teams) middle reliever, Dotel's had a pretty salty career. No shame here:

888 IP - 1077 Ks - 396 BBs - .216 BAA - 108 saves - 130 holds - 114 HRs.

Then I read this morning that the Rangers are interested.

Dotel would just further solidify the Rangers bullpen, especially with right handers if Mike Adams, Koji Uehara and Joe Nathan are all in the loop. In theory, the final four innings of every game are on lockdown. Period. I realize that we're hoping that a 38-year-old Dotel can keep it up another year, that Nathan will stay healthy and that Uehara can get his wheels back on, but tell me an alternative that sounds any better or just as good.

What I love most about Dotel is his control. He hardly walks anyone and the fact that he's allowed just 114 home runs (26 came when he started for the Houston Astros in his second year) in 888 innings is simply remarkable. In 54 innings last season, he allowed six home runs.

Dotel will not be cheap; however, I doubt anyone would need to invest many years in the guy. No problem with taking in the Dotel.
