The NHL knows how to shake things up.The league announced yesterday that there'd be realignment and a new playoff system. This will directly affect the Dallas Stars -- as it will most teams.
There will be four conferences created with geography in mind. No longer will the Stars have to trek to the West Coast and play late games against Anaheim or San Jose.
Instead, the Stars are in Conference B:
Chicago Blackhawks
Columbus Blue Jackets
Dallas Stars
Detroit Red Wings
Minnesota Wild
Nashville Predators
St. Louis Blues
Winnipeg Jets
Beautiful. It was ridiculous that the Stars were in the Pacific Division as much as its ridiculous that the Texas Rangers are in the AL West and the Dallas Cowboys are in the NFC East. Whatevs.
With the realignment, all teams will play every team outside their conference twice, a home and home. Again, great. The Stars and their fans won't need to cross their fingers to catch Washington or Boston or Sidney Crosby in Dallas.
Also, the potential for in-conference rivalries still exists with the Stars playing their bunkmates five or six times in a season.
The playoffs are also different. The top four teams in each conference make the tournament and the first two rounds are played all in-conference. The champion of each conference moves on to play the other three conference winners.
There's frankly not a part of this realignment that doesn't make a ton of sense, especially for the Stars.
