Yesterday, I opined that the BCS would do the right thing and Oklahoma State would be the No. 2 team in the nation and face LSU in the national championship game.Dang.
The polls are out and Oklahoma State narrowly fell short and wound up No. 3 in the nation. As I thought, the BCS computers actually had Oklahoma State No. 2 in front of Alabama. I thought the swing vote would be with the USA Today and Harris polls. Although the Cowboys jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 in each, it wasn't enough.
Alabama: .9419
Oklahoma State: .9333
I guess we can get mad. I'm sure there's Big XII and Oklahoma editorialists penning their damning articles about the failure of the BCS right now.
Truth is, probably 80 percent of the country want an Alabama-LSU rematch and, to tell you the truth, it's not like Alabama is some slacker team. If they had a decent kicker, they'd be No. 1 and LSU would be battling for the No. 2 spot, which they'd probably get.
Alabama essentially beat out Oklahoma State due to reputation -- of the program and the SEC. People just assume the SEC is the strongest conference and people assume that Oklahoma State is a result of the offense-first, spread formation fascination in the Big XII. It's unfair, but we shouldn't be shocked here. Oklahoma or Texas, in the same situation, probably get the nod over Alabama. More so than Oklahoma State did.
Otherwise, it's bowl season and we should be tickled. Two of the three local teams are going bowling (North Texas narrowly missing out on being eligible) and eight of the 10 Big XII teams are going to a bowl game (Texas Tech, Kansas not qualifying).
It should be a fun couple of months until the national championship is played in May.
