The Texas Rangers lost another Spring Training game (blow them up!) 6-1 yesterday and somehow the lead story isn't Neftali Feliz's start.Instead, it's Josh Hamilton's bruised heel and cuts.
The Rangers sent several players to minor league camp. Most are typical (injured Matt West, recovering Wilmer Font) and the atypical. At least one note is Kelvin De La Cruz getting sent to Double-A. He was a lefty procured from the Cleveland Indians shortly before Spring Training.
He was expected, I think, to at least compete for a role in the bullpen. In a short look in camp, he got as many outs as he allowed baserunners (2). So it goes.
If anything, Robbie Ross' performance in camp is maybe more of a factor as De La Cruz's lack thereof.
****
Feliz did pitch. His line:
3 IP - 4 hits - 1 run - 1 BB - 3 Ks.
For his second spring start, you'll take it. He threw four pitches (fastball, curve, slider, change-up) sticking to his heat early and then worked in the off-speed stuff as the game wore on. He threw a lot of strikes and got two double-play groundouts.
Absolutely nothing to hate.
The Good
Julio Borbon keeps hitting. OBP: .529.
Ian Kinsler came back and contributed two hits.
The Bad
Michael Kirkman faced one left-handed hitter: Jason Giambi. He walked and scored. Not good.
They did not allow a run, but Cody Eppley, Miguel De Los Santos and Justin Miller: 3 IP - 2 hits - 4 BBs - 2 Ks. Against the butt-end of the Rockies' line-up, you need better control.
