One chit spent: The Mavericks' super team is put on hold
The line between the Orlando Magic wanting Dwight Howard and Dwight Howard wanting to leave the Orlando Magic is blurred.

There might not be a line anymore.

Today is the NBA's trade deadline and the Magic may or may not trade their star center.

Here is what we do know:

1. Dwight Howard backed off his intentions on opting out of his 2012-13 contract yesterday by saying he'd waive his option, something he's done.

2. With this, the Magic have Howard for at least one more year.

3. Hoping to sell high or to dump a wishy-washy player, the Magic are still shopping the big man.

Typically, I wouldn't care about NBA players waffling back and forth. It's interesting to me personally, but it's worth writing about again and again.

However, this does affect us because Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks told us that the ONLY way the Mavericks could compete in the future is if they cleared cap space (see: let Tyson Chandler) walk in order to be able to sign free agents in the next year (see: Howard, Deron Williams).

Well, Howard is not coming to Dallas in 2012-13 (at the very least ... if he was even considering it anyway). So one half of Cuban's master plan is in the shitter. And, please, do not try to sell me on Chris Kaman always being the original target.

The good news is that Howard's also not going to New Jersey-Brooklyn; therefore, Williams will wind up in the wind over the summer. Again, Williams is a FREE agent and the Mavericks have as good of chance of signing him as any other team willing to pay the price.

Again, the Mavericks' decision to not going for one ONE MORE TIME is not working out.
