The Dallas Cowboys placed the vaunted "franchise" tag on defensive end Anthony Spencer today.

Typically, "franchised" players are good. The Philadelphia Eagles have franchised DeSean Jackson and the New Orleans Saints franchised Drew Brees.

It's a cheap loophole to keep a player from going on the market while the intentions of keeping them a year, trading them or signing them to a long-term deal.

The Cowboys have not used the franchise tag very much. Just Ken Hamlin, Flozell Adams and, now, Spencer have gotten the call. Both Hamlin and Adams worked out long-term deals before having to play under the franchise deal.

Now, Spencer can play for his $8.8 million in 2012. The Cowboys could trade him or sign him long term. Spencer could pull what Hamlin did a few years back and decide to effectively hold out.

Spencer has trade value in a trade market that is anemic, at best. He's 28, former first-round talent and has shown sparks of promise. Problem is, it ain't happening in Dallas if it happens at all.

I don't get the impression the Cowboys are psyched about signing him long term (certainly, the fans aren't). Seems like an opportunity for the Cowboys to have a decent stop-gap there for a season while they re-tool in areas of high need in the draft and free agency like safety, corner, inside linebacker and offensive line.
