OK, so the Dallas Stars might not be the hottest team in the NHL. It's damn close though.

The Stars have collected 13 of 14 points and gone 7-1-2 in their last 10. The Pittsburgh Penguins are 8-2. That's Dallas' one loss.

After beating the Calgary Flames 4-3 in a shootout last night, the Stars are tied for seventh in the conference and tied with Phoenix for tops in the Pacific Division. Outside of Dallas and Pittsburgh, Phoenix is unfortunately also very hot at 7-2-1 in their last 10.

There's no secret here. Everyone's simply playing better than they were a month ago. The goaltending is a lot better. The penalty kill is on a tear and has worked its way up to 12th in the NHL killing off nearly 83 percent of power-play chances. The blue line's better and the forwards are doing what they do on the offensive end.

Mike Ryder, frankly, is looking like the steal of the free agency class putting up numbers like he was 23 again. Loui Eriksson's a beat. Steve Ott's have a superb year.

Actually, considering all the kids and grinders, it seems odd that Dallas is in the position that it finds itself today. It's never a pretty win. There's a lot of shootouts and overtime. It feels unreal.

But they're wins.
