It's a well-regarded consensus that no matter what SMU does with its basketball program, it needs to bring in a game-changer as head coach.Although high profile, Matt Doherty was never, ever going to lead SMU into an era of prosperity. Fighting over the big dogs' scraps is no way to get and remain healthy as a program.
Essentially, the basketball program needs their June Jones -- someone that has experience taking a bad program by the scruff of the neck and winning and someone with something to prove.
With that said: Enter Larry Brown.
When asked, Brown said he would be interested in the SMU gig, citing a desire to get back into professional or college basketball.
Brown's the only coach to have won an NCAA and NBA title. He coached at UCLA and Kansas compiling a 177-61 record. He's won more than 1,200 games in the NBA. He last coached for the Charlotte Bobcats from 2008-10.
I like the skins on the wall, but there are problems.
Brown's got a reputation as a fickle dude. He's been with 13 universities or pro organizations. His longest stint was six years with Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers. He's also 71 years old. Does he have the stomach for the fight, rebuilding a program and recruiting?
Also, he's coached at two of the most renowned basketball programs in the history of college athletics. How hard was it to recruit for Kansas and UCLA? Competing against Baylor, Kansas, Texas, the Oklahoma schools and whoever else is a completely different ballgame.
However, maybe Brown's the shot in the arm SMU needs.
