Handling up on some biznessThe Stars are getting a tremendous effort from goalminder Kari Lehtonen, who is not only playing with insane results, but carrying this load all on his own. The issues with injuries that brought him to Dallas at such a cheap price are long forgotten.
The other turning point is the ridiculous output from the Stars' top two lines. The Mike Ribeiro-Loui Eriksson-Mike Ryder line accounted for all three goals last night, including two from Ryder. He's already set a career mark with 35 goals. More impressively, he's about to eclipse his career mark for points, sitting just one behind his rookie year of 63 points.
Oddly, as good as that line's been, the Jamie Benn-Steve Ott-Adam Burish line might be even better the last week. Against Calgary, they were lights out. Nothing last night, pointswise, but when a team has to account for two lines that are breaking hearts night in and night out, it makes it impossible to win.
For today, we can feel good. Still need two points out of Vancouver and San Jose. That, friends, is way easier said than done.
Notes:
1. When he's done with the Dallas Stars, will there have been anyone more underrated than Mike Ribeiro? Seems his whole tenure in Dallas has been overshadowed by Brenden Morrow, Benn, Mike Modano or even Ryder. Year in, year out, he puts up monster numbers.
2. If Morrow is on your third line, things are going well.
3. Reilly Smith, 20, made his NHL debut last night. A measly four minutes and a shot on goal.
4. Another underappreciated Dallas athlete: Loui Eriksson. Topped 70 points for the third straight year.
5. When was the last time we didn't bitch about the blue line in Dallas?
