While the Dallas Stars were winning all of those games in late February and early March the only thing that really mattered is if they could avoid the slide.

Well, it's here, boys and girls.

The Stars have lost two straight by a combined 9-3 margin against Winnipeg and Chicago. A third straight loss might be death.

The Stars have several things going for them facing off against Phoenix tonight:

1. Phoenix is nipping at the heels. A loss for them would be equally as bad.

2. I'll be there. I'm very lucky.

3. The Stars haven't played since March 16 ... three days off.

4. They're 20-13-3 at home.

But, most of all, they have something to play for. They are tied with Phoenix and Colorado with 83 points. A loss could put them in eighth in the Western Conference and second in the Pacific Division.

Worse yet, Los Angeles and Calgary are suddenly surging. Los Angeles sits at 82 points along with San Jose (who lost last night and is strug-a-ling) and Calgary is at 81 points.

Yes, the Dallas Stars are a mere two points from 11th in the Western Conference. Despite all that winning, there's very little separation. The Stars merely played themselves into contention. Now, they must maintain.
