Spring Training is here. Many battle, few will win. Here are guys looking to break through.

A story you haven't read yet regarding the Texas Rangers this spring is the relative lack of depth in left-handed pitching. Darren Oliver is gone. Mike Gonzalez is still in the wind.

All that is left are starters Derek Holland and Matt Harrison, youngsters like Robbie Ross and Martin Perez and young bullpen hand Kelvin De La Cruz. The odd duck is Miguel De Los Santos. He's never been the premium prospect like Perez and Ross and he lacks the big-league experience like De La Cruz and others.

De Los Santos is a 23-year-old lefty standing at 6-1 and 170. He first turned heads in the 2009 Dominican Summer League when he struck out a remarkable 70 hitters in 32 innings.

De Los Santos' ticket is his change up. Say what you will about the rest of his game, but his change up is remarkably good. It's been called the best secondary pitch in the Rangers' system. It is primarily the sole reason De Los Santos is being talked about.

Ironically, or not, his fastball isn't great. Tops out in the low-90s and his curveball is developing.

De Los Santos is on the 40-man roster. He has performed well in most of his minor-league assignments. I would consider him a bit rushed in his development although it was probably due to his change up being so good.

Last season, he started at Frisco and bombed. His 8.04 ERA reflects the drop in strikeouts per nine innings (12.2) and total loss of control, a big issue with the guy.

After an injury rehab, he returned to High-A Myrtle Beach and although control was still an issues, the strikeout ratios and overall effectiveness returned.

If I had to place a bet today, I'd go with De Los Santos starting in Frisco again, hoping for better results than a year ago. Still, I think he's really in the mix this spring and will get a long look with an extremely outside bet that he might make the bigs. At the very least, he's a prime candidate for a mid-season call-up.
