I couldn't find a good photo of Newman getting hurdled by my dad
The Dallas Cowboys said a long, sad goodbye to dear friends yesterday.

The team, regretfully, cut cornerback Terence Newman and "cold-weather kickoff specialist" David Buehler effectively saving about $8 million off the cap.

It also brings to light the perils of the NFL Draft and the Dallas Cowboys. Newman and Buehler were first- and fifth-round draft picks, respectively.

Of Buehler's 2009 draft class, there were 12 picks, which is a lot, although none were in the first two rounds (the Cowboys traded down ... the Lions got Brandon Pettigrew from Oklahoma State from their pick and the Buffalo Bills took guard Andy Levitre ... both are multi-year starters).

Of the 12, only three are on the team as of right now (Stephen McGee, John Phillips, Vic Butler). None are starters.

Newman's downfall took time. It was clear that his abilities were waning year by year.

When he was drafted out of Kansas State, he was a premier cornerback and kick returner. He never returned kicks and battled a seemingly systematic series of "minor" injuries (turf toe, groin strains).

I think the general opinion early on was that Newman was a very good cornerback. A few years in, he was a top 10 corner in the league. A year later, he was top 15. The next year, top 20.

By last season, he as a punchline. After he was hurdled by men of girth in the New York Giants season-ending loss, the obvious got even more obviouser. Newman was D-U-N.
