The gut reaction is disdain. Terry's out for himself. He's a free agent after the season and he doesn't have a ton of years left on those legs. How could he possibly feel this way about his teammates and the franchise that's made him rich and successful?
Then I consider this: What have the Mavericks done for Terry this year?
Mark Cuban and Co. took a championship team -- one that could have easily competed on a high level this season -- and blew it up. Why? To go after guys that will replace Terry, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler, Jason Kidd and Joe John Barea.
The Mavericks essentially are looking at Kidd, Terry, Nowitzki and Marion -- three soldiers, three champs -- and thumbing their nose at the remaining years of their excellent, if not Hall-of-Fame careers.
The Dallas Mavericks don't care. Why should Terry care about the Dallas Mavericks?
The real loser? Not Cuban or Terry. But the fans. Sports is a business. No one is naive enough to think otherwise. I think teams and players have a certain expectation of loyalty until the money goes wrong and then there's animosity and bad feelings.
Fans are not ignorant either; although, the loyalty quotient is much higher. Cuban's getting paid. Terry and Co. are getting paid. The fans are the ones doing the paying. The fans invest money, but they also invest feelings and emotions. In fact, for most, that's all they can regularly add to the kitty. When things go wrong, a contract simply can't be nontendered or torn up. It's like breaking up with a significant other.
Again, owners and players do not care about fans. It doesn't mean fans shouldn't expect more.
With that said, Lamar Odom shot 1-6 with three rebounds and four fouls last night. All for none.
