Certainly impressed by Will VenableYu Darvish pitched. Two inning, 36 pitches, eight batters, two hits and three strikeouts. He threw seven pitches: Four- and two-seam fastball, two curves (67 mph, 80 mph), a splitter, a slider and cut fastball. Twenty-six of his 36 pitches were strikes. Seven of the eight batters faced fell down 0-1. Go here to get the inside scoop on Darvish's day. Some of this is fascinating.
My question is, why do we have to be so cautious in getting excited about the guy. We're not dumb: He could flame out or his arm could fall off. Same for Justin Verlander or Clayton Kershaw.
Thing is, you can't sit there and laud GM Jon Daniels and the scouting department for all the thousand things they've gotten right in five years and then completely question their acquisition of Darvish.
No way he asks ownership for the money to go after Darvish if he wasn't willing to stake his reputation on the kid. Daniels isn't on some short leash anymore. He built two pennant-winning teams and his scouts have routinely found insane talent in Asia, South America, Latin America, American high schools and colleges.
Pretending to temper feelings now -- with a guy with a little experience -- is dumb and, frankly, unfun.

The Good
Alberto Gonzalez, vying for the utility infield spot, got three hits and drove in three.

The Bad
Miguel De Los Santos did himself no favors allowing two runs on two walks and two hits. But he did strike out four in two innings.
