When people talk about the 1986 World Series, more than likely it will wind up being about that groundball rolling through Bill Buckner's legs.

Soon after, some smartass will say something to the effect of, "Well, that was just game 6. The Red Sox still could have won the Series in game 7."

This is true. The Red Sox lost game 7, 8-5, two days later. It makes sense. However, there is a large population of Texas Rangers fans that know that the Red Sox were not going to win game 7. We know because the Rangers were not going to win game 7 of the 2011 World Series.

We know about game 6. We know about game 7.

For some, it's tough to get over if they ever get over it. Honestly, I feel sort of bad that I don't feel worse.

Don't get me wrong: I felt like shit for two weeks after the Rangers blew two two-out leads in the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. I kind of hate the Cardinals now even though I have nothing really against them as a franchise.

I don't hate Neftali Feliz, Nelson Cruz, Ron Washington or any number of other scapegoat nominees. It happened. It sucked balls. I am ready for 2012.

I read an excellent article commemorating (or eulogizing) the 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates and "The Slide" -- Sid Bream's slow-motion dash from second to home in the NLCS that got the Atlanta Braves into the World Series. It also started a quick decline for the Pirates, who haven't had a winning season since.

Would making the 1992 World Series have made up for 19 years of total defeat? The Braves lost the World Series to the Toronto Blue Jays. Maybe the Pirates win and maybe they don't. Would Pirates fans trade that uncertainty for the last 19 years?

It's easy to get down about game 6. It really is. I think people should mourn or whatever for as long as they need to. But you also need a wider purview. We're talking big picture. It burned me when the 2005-06 Dallas Mavericks didn't win the Finals. By October 2006, I knew that they were capable of making another run.

I'm confident that GM Jon Daniels and this franchise can make another run. It may not be in 2012. It might be in five years like the Mavericks. They might not make a World Series again in my lifetime. It doesn't make the last three seasons any less special.

A reason many Rangers fans might still be in the dumps is the idea that it might never happen again. This is a young franchise that hasn't seen very much success. Then it fell in our laps like a ton of bricks. The Rangers are going to be good again. This isn't a fly-by-night operation. This isn't a flash in the pan. Insert idiom here.

The grind is back in two days. You can't do the grind with your eyes looking back. The grind needs your full attention. The grind does not care about 2011.
