I think I'm starting to turn around on the guy. Last night, his Dallas Mavericks had their asses wrapped and hand-delivered to them by the Los Angeles Clippers, 94-75.
Lamar Odom had a tummy ache and Jason Kidd is old, so both were out. We were regaled with the pristine analysis from Jason Terry post-game when he made us all aware that Odom is important to this team because of the "depth" he provides and that we -- meaning, I guess, white people -- pay too much attention to "statistics."
"Statistics" like 47 percent shooting for the Clips on the road or 39 percent shooting for the Mavericks at home or the 11 rebound differential won by the Clippers or the 5-23 three-point turdburger the Mavs threw down. "Statistics" like those are the ones that Terry wants us to quit worrying about.
Rick Carlisle had this to say:
"Sometimes you just get your [butt] kicked that bad. We were poor; there are no excuses. Guys being out, any of that kind of stuff. All of that stuff rings hollow."
Apparently, coach is telling us that getting beat by 19 (statistic!!!) at home isn't cool. Or how about this:
"I was waiting for somebody to knock him down, do something. We just didn't do it and really that's on me. If we're not aware and if we're not going to be physical with a guy that gets it going like that, then it's on the head coach."
Wow. Carlisle is referring to Clippers guard Randy Foye, who scored 28 and went 8-15 from behind the three-point arc. One of his makes came with Dirk Nowitzki shyly backing away as Delonte West failed to pull over to even get in Foye's area code. The three was drained.
Things are not going well. Despite bailing out the boat, the thing's still sinking and Carlisle's clearly not pleased with things. Who knows what is happening in the room. I do know that most coaches don't clearly call out their players like that for lack of toughness without attempting to make a point.
Here's another interesting "statistic": The Mavs score the second-least points per game in the Western Conference (94.4). Sorry, JET.
They are now a ho-hum 30-24, sixth in the West and two games out of ninth. Hopefully, Odom is back soon. We'll never survive.
