Welcome, Larry BrownIt's transparent as to how this came about. SMU knows the risks. Brown is old (71) and has been out of the college realm for about 30 years. He's also a carpetbagger -- comes in, attempts to win, may or may not actually win and leaves.
I'm not sure that Brown will care about SMU program in 2014, 2015, 2016 or 2020. Hell, SMU might not care about SMU basketball in 2014, 2015, 2016 or 2020.
They do care about 2013. That's when SMU enters the Big East Conference.
SMU basketball needed a splash, and, much like the football program, they hope it becomes a wave. Bringing in a new coach is fine, but they need to repair the obvious rift between them and the local high schools. Dipping into the local talent is the only way the Mustangs will ever get good again and start to fill up that gym.
Folks talk about laxing the enrollment requirements, academically speaking, but I think they can go a long way in developing the relationships in Dallas and Fort Worth. There are a ton of kids here that are good academically and athletically that would like to stay close to home. Playing in the Big East will help. Bringing in a high-profile coach helps a lot. But a change in relationship between them and the local high school coaches will be monumental moving forward.
It's a bold stroke for SMU that has a high probability of blowing up in their face. Then again, what have they got to lose?
