As much as I might rail against Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks or whatever, this will never, ever get old.The Dallas Mavericks are going to the playoffs!
Of course, given the season, it happened in pretty anti-climatic fashion. The Houston Rockets lost to the New Orleans Hornets, 105-99.
Despite the year and what most believe will be an abbreviated playoff run, playoffs should never ever be treated lightly. Just ask the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Stars. Just ask the 1993-94 Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavericks have made the playoffs every season since 2000-01. That's 12 straight and 12 of the 18 total post-season excursions for the franchise. They've reached the conference finals three times, won it twice and, of course, won their only title last season.
This season will mark the lowest winning percentage (.556) since 1999-2000, when they went 40-42. The lowest winning percentage in this 12-year run was in 2008-09 when they won just 61 percent of their games. Flying completely under the radar, some time last season, the Mavericks, as a franchise, got over .500 for its history. They are 1,299-1,274.
The Mavericks have had three coaches (Don Nelson, Avery Johnson, Rick Carlisle) and three principle point guards (Steve Nash, Devin Harris, Jason Kidd). Before the run, the Mavericks battled through six different coaches including Dick Motta twice.
Some of the names on that first playoff team: Loy Vaught, Bill Curley, Vernon Maxwell, Calvin Booth, Hubert Davis, Shawn Bradley, Courtney Alexander, Juwan Howard, Howard Eisley and Wang Zhizhi.
The lone remnant: Dirk Nowitzki.
He has played in 124 career playoff games the last 12 years. At the very least, he should approach the top 50 in playoff games played this season. A little run and he'll smash through. One guy he won't catch: Jason Kidd, who has 142 career playoff games.
Nowitzki's playoff resume: 25.9 PPG - 10.4 RPG - 46% FG - 38% 3PT - 89% FT.
Friends, let's not take this for granted. This player and this team deserve all of our gratitude and honor because it is not easy to do what they've done the past decade. Winning never gets old.
