Back in the holster, cowboy
Give the Dallas Mavericks credit. They're a trainwreck. But who doesn't stop to watch a trainwreck.

Losing three-overtime games. Starting centers getting a rebound per game. Point guards poking opponents in the ear. Lamar Odom.

In terms of talking points and pure entertainment, this season takes the cake.

The Mavericks lost to the Utah Jazz last night 123-121 in three overtimes. Unfortunately, Phoenix won and the Denver Nuggets beat the Houston Rockets. It leaves the Mavericks two games out of the fifth seed, a half game out of the sixth seed and 1.5 out of missing the playoffs.

Your five at crunch time: Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Ian Mahinmi and Jason Terry. I don't know why Brendan Haywood and Shawn Marion weren't in to, at the very least, keep Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson off the boards (which proved the difference in the game).

Nowitzki scored 40. The rest of the starters (Kidd, Delonte West, Haywood, Marion) scored 30. The bench scored 51. The starting five for the Jazz scored 106. Granted, Jazz bloggers can't point to the extraordinary bench numbers, but who needs to when you win the game?

There's a lot wrong with this picture. As stated yesterday, it ain't Dirk, who was fantastic. If anyone wants to argue that the reason Haywood, a capable 7-0 center in the NBA, can't grab more than two rebounds in 25 minutes is because he's playing a lot of on-the-ball defense, feel free. I'd love to listen.

The Mavericks are skating. If the 2011 championship doesn't happen and Tyson Chandler still leaves, this team is getting torched. I don't know if this a good or bad thing. Appears lazy after a decade of being told that ownership and management was "all about winning." Right?

Excuses are being made. Part of the media sucks on Mark Cuban's teat and the other half want to keep their media credentials, so they are wont to be too critical.

I am tired of excuses for Jason Kidd, Dirk being out of shape, the Lamar Odom debacle, the Tyson Chandler debacle, Brendan Haywood and everything else. Let's call a spade a spade. Grow a pair.
