Coach Joe: So hard to say goodbye
Former Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Joe Avezzano died the other day. He was 68.

They say "coaches coach" and that's what Coach Joe was doing. He'd moved to Milan to coach the Milan Seamen of the Italian Football League. He died of a heart attack.

He was the special teams coach for the Cowboys from 1990-2002 and won three Super Bowls. Outside of Jimmy Johnson, there wasn't a member of the coaching staff more out front, more vocal and more known. Fact is, guys like Ernie Zampisi, Dave Wannstedt, Norv Turner and others coached from the box. Avezzano wound up in front of the camera just as much as the players.

Ornery and angry, Coach Joe was always shown urging his squad, yelling when things went wrong and celebrating like he'd won the lottery when thing went right.

And things went right a lot. Rarely did we ever worry about the Cowboys' special teams in the early- and mid-1990s.

Coach Joe never escaped the purview of Dallas sports. He coached the Dallas Desperadoes and could regularly be found on the radio talking football. By all accounts, he was a sweet guy.
