The playoffs for the Dallas Mavericks started three days ago. The day the divorce from Lamar Odom was finalized. The day they beat the Sacramento Kings. This season's been a beast on multiple levels and it sort of comes down to these two weeks and every week thereafter. Last night, they disposed of the Golden State Warriors (it wasn't pretty ... the Warriors wound up shooting 47 percent and outrebounded the Mavs) 112-103, which puts them in the six-seed in the Western Conference. There are seven games left and the Mavs need to keep winning.
They are 1.5 games out of the fifth seed -- Memphis Grizzlies -- and no matter what anyone tells you, getting the fifth seed is highly advantageous for the Mavericks.
Many will tell you how well the Mavericks "match-up" with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. This would be great if the Mavs weren't the defending world champions. They're not sneaking up on anyone this year and I'm sure the Spurs and Thunder wouldn't mind exorcising some demons in a playoff series.
Also, indicating that somehow the Mavericks have a shot against the Spurs or Thunder is pretty insulting to what those two teams have done this season. They've dominated from stem to stern and have real talent and a real cohesiveness. Meanwhile, the Mavericks had to two get two guys into shape -- including their best player in the history of the franchise -- dilly-dally with the other's mental issues and work through a pretty lackluster roster in preparation for the deliverance of Dwight and Deron in the summer.
The Thunder and Spurs are on a different tier. No way you walk into the playoffs thinking you can play with anyone. You've got to play like the underdog.
Therefore, getting the fifth seed is vital. It sets you up with a series against the Los Angeles Clippers, who are scary in their own right, but not on the level of the Thunder and Spurs.
Just keep winning, play your game, get folks healthy and shooting well. Take your chances when the time comes.
Notes:
1. Jason Kidd with his second straight -- for me -- noteworthy game: nine points, 10 boards, 12 assists, three steals and two blocks.
2. An X-factor moving forward: The Dallas bench. Scored 57 with four guys (Brandan Wright, Jason Terry, Roddy B and Vinsanity) in double-digits. Also notched 17 boards and 11 assists.
3. Brendan Haywood is such on his last leg as a Maverick.
4. Yet, so many will tell you how great he is.
5. Mavericks are 12-16 on the road.
6. I could've named you two starters for the Warriors before last night.
