All the talk of Texas A&M leaving the Big X for the SEC was just that: All talk. What many didn't think about was whether the SEC wanted them.Turns out, the SEC is fine with the way things are. For now, Texas A&M are not going anywhere.
Before we move on, is Dan Beebe the most inept college sports official in these United States? He's watching his conference -- arguably one of the best in the nation in a lot of different sports for the last decade -- completely fall apart.
Nebraska and Colorado are already gone. Oklahoma and A&M flirted with the SEC. Texas has been rumored to go to any number of conferences. Mizzou's danced with the Big Ten. Not only is Beebe sitting back giving Texas their TV network, but, by all accounts, he's not even going on the offensive. This is three (3!!!) years of his conference crumbling and we get nothing.
Back to Texas A&M, last week I posted a shortsighted perspective on A&M leaving. I considered one thing: Winning. Winning basketball or football games. Going to the post-season. Thus, I thought, schools made money and all were happy. Nothing has changed. The SEC -- in football -- is infinitely tougher than the Big X, as currently constructed.
I did not consider two other items: Money and respect.
This is a fantastic article putting the entire A&M exodus in perspective. Read it.
First, going to the SEC would mean more money. There is no caste system in the SEC (in fact, only the Big X has its haves and have nots). Vanderbilt and Kentucky make as much money as Florida or Alabama. There's no Florida TV network. SEC -- until this year -- always paid its teams more (the original Big Ten now pays more).
Furthermore, there's a huge financial opportunity by joining the SEC fray with ticket sales (imagine Florida, Alabama, Arkansas et al. coming to Kyle Field every year), merchadising and a lot more. Also, it'll provide A&M to tap another recruiting market through the Deep South and Florida.
As for respect, we know the story here. Beebe and the Big X has sold its soul to Texas. I would question whether Texas deserves that respect. They've won the Big XII twice since Mack Brown took over. TWICE.
Yes, the money and the alumni base is gigantic. But that much more that it deserves more than A&M, OU, Oklahoma State or Missouri? TV network big? Please.
Once Beebe gave Texas his first born, the other schools saw what was important. Teams like Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Iowa State need Texas to stay. Other schools don't. A&M does not understand why it should kowtow to Texas.
Furthermore, the Aggies don't understand why no one bows before Alabama or Florida in the SEC or USC and Stanford in the Pac-10. They don't. Only the Big X is run with such a class system and A&M doesn't understand why it should too.
This is a fucking mess, for sure. The Big X is going to dissolve sooner than later. All these teams will scatter soon and we'll look back at 2009, 2010 and 2011 when it all could've been stop and remedied, but wasn't. The death rattle of the Big XII.
