The Texas Rangers ain't playing. The team hit four dingers as part of a 14-hit, 10-run onslaught running the Cleveland Indians out of the Ballpark last night, 10-4.
Two of those homers came from Dave Murphy, who in his career is hitting .367 off the Indians. Last night was his third four-hit game ... of the month. September, frankly, has been his bitch: .426/.417/.809 with four homers, four doubles, 12 RBI and 12 runs.
Every season we have high hopes for Murphy. Then he winds up on the bench getting spare at-bats and by mid-season we wonder why he's even on the team and we look forward to possibly trading him.
Then, it happens. Someone always gets hurt, Murphy is thrust into the starting line-up and he goes on some insane run and we love him again. We couldn't imagine the world without Murph. It's why we love this dumb baseball team.
The magic number is now 12 and the lead over California is still three games.
Notes:
1. Ron Washington's some kind of idiot savant when it comes to pinch hitting. With no numbers to verify this at all, but his instinctual actions -- like pinch hitting Craig Gentry for Endy Chavez last night with runners on ... resulting in a two-run single -- seem to work out 75-85 percent of the time. If he can only learn to use a bullpen ...
2. Carlos Santana is a son of a bitch. Hitting .317 career against the Rangers with four homers and five doubles.
3. We'll never know what kind of numbers Adrian Beltre would have put up had he not missed 800 days with that hamstring. He's at 89 RBI and 24 homers with it.
4. Mike Napoli's average is up to .308. His OBP, .409.
5. Matt Harrison allowed his first homer in the last 30+ innings. He's allowed 13 in 167 innings. He allowed 10 in 78 innings a season ago. Only seven this season are at home.
6. Two pristine frames from Mike Gonzalez.
7. Twenty games over .500.
