No one's been kicked in the nuts more the last five days than Tony Romo.No one's been defended to the hilt more the last five days than Tony Romo.
To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I guess that big ol' dummy Isaac Newton had it right.
To me, Tony Romo and all of the talk surrounding him is cut and dry, black and white. He's better than most, not as good as some and probably not good enough.
For the Buffalo Bills or Cincinnati Bengals, he would be a gift from God. But this is the motherfucking Dallas Cowboys. This is the city that measures success based on championships. On rings. Don't bring Kool-Aid to the gin party.
And Romo is Kool-Aid.
This is Romo's sixth season. He's 31 years old. Chances are really good that he won't get much better and he probably won't get worse for, say, another three or four years.
Hey, I like Romo. At the very least he's entertaining. I, by no means, also don't think he's the answer if your goal is to win a Super Bowl.
The biggest problem isn't Romo. He's a good player on a team with a very strong first 20 guys on the roster that could start anywhere else. It's Nos. 21-53 that get the Cowboys in such bad spots.
Romo is not good enough to overcome these issues unlike Peyton Manning (how many so-so Colts teams has he carried) or Tom Brady or even Brett Favre.
So, to all the Romo defenders, all the reactors, what is the answer in two seasons when the Cowboys go 8-8 this year and, say, 10-6 next year?
Finishing 8-8 this season is a best-case scenario that is shared among most. Going 10-6 in another year may be pushing things, but it's not out of the question.
Romo will be 33 years old, eight years into his NFL career and he will probably have one playoff win and three winning seasons.
What then?
At what point do even the Romo defenders begin to realize that the writing is on the wall for the guy. That all along he was a great athlete that made dumb decisions. In the NFL, as a quarterback, you don't need to be a good athlete. But you do need to make good decisions.
Dissecting Romo does no good. What does it really matter if he has a high football IQ, cares more for football than he does golf, dates celebrities, goes to Cabo San Lucas or says the right or wrong things in post-game interviews.
Who cares if he cares or not?
At the nitty gritty, all he needs to do, most of the time, is not fumble the ball at the 1-yard-line. All he needs to do is not throw the ball into the stomach of the best cornerback in the league.
It's relatively simple. I realize it's a fast, complicated game. But solutions aren't always complicated.
I would bet there have been dozens of stars in professional sports that could care less and had a ton more complications and distractions than Romo. Heck, Mickey Mantle was an alcoholic who received blow jobs beneath the outfield bleachers.
These ancilliary items don't matter. Performance does.
I just wonder how much difference there will be now versus 2014.
