Got to admit, the Dallas Stars maybe thought they dodged a bullet for their second home game of the season. The Texas Rangers were scheduled to play Sunday and it was sorta rained out nad rescheduled for 4 p.m. Monday.
The Stars were scheduled to play the Phoenix Coyotes at 5 p.m. at the American Airlines Center.
Yikes.
Apparently, about 6,300 die hard fans watched the Stars steal a 2-1 shootout victory.
By "steal" I mean Loui Eriksson scored with 30 seconds left in the game to tie it at 1-1 and scored along with Mike Ribeiro in the shootout for the two points.
The Rangers thing the Stars clearly can't control. It was a dumb move by MLB that's yet to be fully explained. However, what did the Stars do to get a game at 5 p.m.? I know that hockey is a sport popular in Canada and the north, but surely they know that Texas is in Central Standard Time?
I've yet to see a logical reason as to why the Stars got a 5 p.m. drop. Defending Big D did address the attendance issue, which kind of started last year. Whoever wrote the post is right: Winning cures all ills. If the Stars continue to win, people will show up. It'll get especially interesting once baseball ends and if basketball never returns.
Remember, a year ago, fans were dishing $500 a ticket to go to the World Series, another $500 to go to a Cowboys game and then the Mavericks are always a good ticket. It's a crowded sports landscape and the key to surviving in Dallas-Fort Worth is proven in the standings. Still, the Stars were in first in the Pacific Division almost two-thirds of last season and, still, attendance lagged.
No matter what, people won't come to a 5 p.m. drop unless its a weekend. And ain't nobody paying attention to the Stars if the Rangers or Cowboys are playing (the NHL steers clear of the NFL).
The other issue to come from the 2-1 win was special teams. A portion of their game that killed them a season ago is continuing. The Stars went 0-7 last night with the man advantage. They've converted on one of 14 opportunities.
Thankfully, the penalty kill might be a little better. Still, the Stars can't go 82 games scoring five on five. It wears on your and can dry up when things get tight. They must figure out the power play.
