Growing pains: Jason Garrett just doesn't have great answer for you

I've got to admit, Jason Garrett's boner in the Arizona game Sunday and the subsequent abortion of a press conference yesterday has yielded some pretty interesting talk.

People want Garrett to hold himself up to the same standards of accountability that he measures his players and coaches.

They want someone to take the blame. Garrett's wanting no part of that, for whatever reason. I don't know who screwed up. Garrett should've called a timeout after the Dez Bryant catch. So should have Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Bryant or anyone on the field.

It's cavalcade of idiocy to be honest with you and Garrett's inability to sufficiently think up some bullshit rhetoric in the 24 hours between the game and the Monday afternoon press conference is distressing.

What this reminds us of is the fact that Garrett's been the head coach in 20 NFL games. He's going to make a mistake. He's going to compound that mistake with other mistakes. It's going to happen. It already has and it'll happen again.

The key, first, for Garrett is to get a handle on damage control. Think of every possible question you'll be asked and come up with either an honest answer or an answer that sounds honest. Either way, you should never go unprepared to face the media, even if it's the milquetoast Dallas media that uses exclamation points behind question marks in blog posts (ahem, Tim McMahon) as if you were writing in your diary.

Two, Garrett will need to improve in-game decision making. Remember, tons of coaches such at clock management and all that. Andy Reid is notorious for butchering the ends of games. Mike McCarthy has had his troubles in the past.

Garrett will get better because he's smarter than a lot of coaches. He'll figure things out. To steal a page from Tony Romo's book, if this is the worst thing that happens to Garrett in his potentially lengthy career as an NFL coach, then he should feel pretty happy.

Thing is, Cowboys fans need to stick to Garrett here. The Cowboys need some stability. It seems a guy will come in, show a little something and at the first sign that fans are getting sick of the guy, he's run out of town. Granted, Bill Parcells kind of left on his own terms. That sort of blows up my entire argument here. But you get what I'm saying.

Name the most successful NFL franchises of the last decade. Pittsburgh. Indianapolis. Green Bay. Chicago. New England. Philadelphia. Baltimore. New York Giants.

In a decade, there's been three coaching changes and two (Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy) were due to retirement. Trust me, McCarthy, Reid, Lovie Smith, Tom Coughlin and Dungy have all been on the brink of getting canned, I'm sure. As noted, Reid and McCarthy are notorious for clock management. Still, the franchises stick by these guys come hell or high water. They know that things will get fixed sooner or later. Smith in Chicago, for example, simple wins a lot of games despite not always having the best talent.

The Cowboys need to stick by Garrett. Hell or high water. They need to give him the time to get better and figure things out. The game, maybe, is still going a little to fast for him and there's not shame in that and I don't think that's any indictment on his ability. It's different calling plays, running the game, running the game and not wanting to blow your brains out.

Now is not the time to jump ship. Now is the time to come together.
