Lamar Odom returned, Dirk Nowitzki laid down 40 and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Utah Jazz 102-96.I'd love someone to write a book about locker room chemistry: What matters and what doesn't and how do distractions really play in the room?
How did the Lamar Odom saga really affect the Dallas Mavericks?
Did it deter Brendan Haywood from grabbing rebounds or Jason Terry from hitting shots?
It's all about the psychology of sports. While Michael Jordan excelled when he was physically sick and Derek Fisher excelled in the playoffs while his daughter was going through eye issues, Odom couldn't quite be able to put things together. Chuck Knoblauch couldn't throw a ball to first base.
However, how did all of this affect their teammates?
Odom was good last night. Not great. Not really good. Just good:
3-5 FGs - 5 rebounds - 3 assists - 3 blocks.
Rick Carlisle called it the most energy Odom's had all year. Granted, he's said that after every game. But he was better.
Ironically, outside of Nowitzki (14-21 FGs), the other four starters shot 9-26 and posted a -4 (and Shawn Marion was a +6). Good news was that Jason Terry shot a lot better.
Maybe things, finally, are back to normal.
