I typically take at least one moment out of every year to relish the fact that a team from Houston lost. The Dallas Mavericks beat the Houston Rockets for a second-straight game, 90-81, last night at the American Airlines Center.
I hate Houston and I generally dislike their professional sports teams despite the fact that I really have no opinion of the Astros or Texans/Oilers. It's really the Rockets I hate.
Frankly, this isn't monumental. They beat a relatively marginal team that was playing for a second-straight night, on the road. The Rockets had also played in two straight overtime games. The fact that the Rockets stormed out to a 30-19 lead early and then faded drastically (outscored 50-31 in the second and third quarters) was no surprise. Plus they were without their two best players, Kevin Martin and Kyle Lowry. The Mavericks had to win this game because it's never going to be easier. Low-hanging fruit.
The loss is pretty detrimental to the Rockets. They are now a full two games behind the Mavericks sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference gaggle.
As for the game, it's pretty unspectacular from the Mavericks' point of view, as are most for them. All you can hope is that they hit a couple of three pointers, outrebound the opponent and limit turnovers. Most nights that'll put them in contention.
The starting rotation -- again -- did very little as the bench got monster minutes. Dirk Nowitzki was the only starter in double-digits (21) and he shot like shit (5-17 FG). The bench was good. Ironically or not, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's story has Lamar Odom leading the charge off the bench.
Nevermind that he was outscored by Roddy Beaubois, Brandan Wright and Jason Terry, and that he just had nine points and four rebounds. It's sad that we're to the point that Odom doesn't totally look fucking terrible and we consider it a positive. Sad, sad, sad.
Triple sad that our local media doesn't have a set of testicles between them to really address this Odom thing at its core. Clearly, I don't know any facts, but Mark Cuban must have the local writers scared shitless with the threat of revoking press credentials. The Star-Telegram pokes fun at Odom. But there's nothing serious and there's really nothing taking the Mavs or Odom to task for the last three months. The radio guys are more forthcoming. Then again, they don't depend on locker room access ... at least the ones not on the Mavericks' payroll.
