Matt Harrison: Teixeira who?
Depending on who you talked to, back in 2007, Matt Harrison was one of the elite prospects for the Atlanta Braves.

In 2006, Baseball Prospectus had him as the No. 2 prospect in a typically strong system (Jarrod Saltalamacchia was No. 1). The next year, Baseball America had Harrison was the third best prospect behind Salty and some 17-year-old shortstop named Elvis Andrus.

Once Harrison was lumped into the trade for Mark Teixeira and he labored with the Texas Rangers for a couple of years, the sheen wore off. He was getting older and fans were getting more frustrated as the team got better and better.

Once, Harrison looked like the odd man out if a better option could be found. As it stands in 2012, Harrison might be the best pitcher for the Texas Rangers.

Derek Holland might be the second best. And these are not bad things.

Harrison and Holland are having tremendous springs following up on their break-out 2011 campaigns. Harrison was the first to get an extended look this spring going five innings yesterday allowing a run and his first walk of Spring Training. His line:

10 IP - 5 hits - 2 runs - 1 BB - 7 Ks.

Holland's spring:

9 IP - 7 hits - 2 runs - 0 BB - 7 Ks.

For two years, the Texas Rangers have won two American League pennants by being an even, really good baseball club. It's been hard to find a definite hole in their game. They're good in almost every aspect of the game and if arguing whether David Murphy is good in left field is your lone point of contention, then things are going pretty well. Just ask the other 30 teams in the Majors.

This year, the Ranger will lean heavily on Harrison and Holland (in addition to de facto No. 1 Colby Lewis) to steer this team as the enigmas known as Yu Darvish and Neftali Feliz spurt and sputter as they become full-time starters in the United States.

There will be a lot of moot points come August if Holland and Harrison are just simply really good: Two guys that live up to the prospect rankings.
